Zābaki Tree Nursery Wins First Place in the “Most Sustainable Wooden Building 2026” Category

On 10 September, the results of the international competition “Sustainability in Architecture, Construction and Design 2026” were announced, with clients, architects and builders from Latvia and the Baltic states taking part. Our Zābaki tree nursery won first place in the “Most Sustainable Wooden Building 2026” category at the competition.
This award is a significant endorsement of our approach to creating a modern, sustainable and high-quality environment, rooted in long-term thinking and respect for timber as a material of the future.
“The Sustainability in Architecture, Construction and Design competition is a non-governmental initiative of the construction sector. It is an award that recognises outstanding and sustainable projects in the fields of architecture, construction, landscape architecture, and design across the Baltic region. This initiative demonstrates that sustainability considerations are by no means unimportant to clients, architects and builders alike. It shows that it is becoming increasingly important to work towards reducing energy and resource consumption and lowering CO₂ emissions, to consider the reuse of materials, to preserve biodiversity, to ensure a healthy environment for people, and to adapt buildings to climate change. We can be truly proud that the complex of wooden buildings at Zābaki tree nursery has received such recognition,”

The building complex of Zābaki tree nursery is characterised by well-thought-out sustainability solutions – solar panels are installed on the roof of the cold store, while the administrative and outbuildings are complemented by green roofs that blend harmoniously into the landscape. Rainwater collected from the roofs of buildings is reused to water plants, and energy-efficient heating and ventilation systems have been installed in the buildings.
This year, 47 entries were received for the competition, which were assessed by an international jury. In total, awards were presented in five categories: the most sustainable building, the most sustainable project for a public building and a residential building, the most sustainable wooden building, the most sustainable site development, and the most sustainable student idea.
The Sustainability in Architecture, Construction and Design competition is organised by the Building Design and Construction Council in collaboration with the State Construction Control Bureau.
Lai attīstītu zināšanās balstītu mežsaimniecību, demonstrētu koksnes izmantošanu būvniecībā Latvijā, veicinātu bērzu stādu plašāku pieejamību, 2025. gada 29. maijā AS “Latvijas Finiera” kokaudzētavā “Zābaki” Siguldas novadā atklāts jauns un tehnoloģiski inovatīvs koka ēku komplekss. Tā centrālais elements ir Latvijā pirmais un Baltijā unikāls koka konstrukcijas risinājums – stādu dzesētava ar specifiskiem mikroklimata režīmiem. Jaunais koka ēku komplekss ir “zaļās investīcijas” vairāk nekā piecu miljonu eiro apmērā Siguldas novadā un Gaujas Nacionālajā parkā, apliecinot, ka saimnieciskā darbība iespējama arī dabai draudzīgā veidā, ražošanas objektu integrējot ainavā.
