Sustainability – our natural promise

For our extensive and international team, the meaning of the concept “sustainability” has been a natural measure of our daily work since day one. Throughout the value chain, we have always strived to balance economic benefits, responsible behaviour towards employees and society in general, as well as care for the environment and its diversity. It’s only natural. The business of Latvijas Finieris is inseparable from the forestry lifecycle, so thinking in terms of many years and generations is naturally encoded in our company’s DNA.

Jānis Ciems, Chairman of the Board of Latvijas Finieris

We invite you to read our Sustainability Report 2022, which includes information on sustainability issues relevant to the Group’s operations. It has been prepared in accordance with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) standard, focusing on four key topics for Latvijas Finieris: forestry, positive employee experience, environmental impact and CO₂ emissions management, as well as the development of by-product utilisation.

Our actions for the future

We are convinced that the rational use of fertile land, the circular economy and the cascade recycling of biological resources, gradually replacing the use of fossil resources, are and will continue to be key to future sustainability. This means fundamental changes in the world economy, in the way people think and in the choices they make every day.

Our work is creating higher quality and more productive forests that sequester carbon faster and more efficiently. It helps to meet Europe’s climate targets, ensures a sustainable flow of renewable wood resources and contributes to the country’s environmental goals. The task of a responsible forest owner is to promote biodiversity. Although Latvian legislation in this area is some of the strictest in Europe, we are committed to doing more – a special layer of land category “voluntary nature protection” has been created in the forests owned by Latvijas Finieris.

We only use timber sourced from sustainably and responsibly governed and managed forests. The company’s timber procurement and processing processes comply with the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation.

We value long-term relationships with partners throughout the supply chain, so we develop business links with companies that operate according to internationally recognised sustainability principles. An important criterion for choosing suppliers is their reputation and their social responsibility, which includes paying taxes, safety at work, responsible use of resources, professional treatment and fair trade. Our general criteria are described in the Group’s Procurement Policy.

Protecting the environment is an integral part of our corporate strategy and we believe that less is more. Whether in terms of GHG emissions and waste, or resource and energy consumption, we are continuously improving the efficiency of our production processes to reduce our impact on the environment.

Environment

Latvijas Finieris’ factories are located close to the extraction sites of wood resources, thus ensuring short transport distances. When planning deliveries of finished products to the customers, we carefully assess the environmental aspects of available logistics solutions – where possible, we choose the shortest delivery routes and the most fuel-efficient transport. We are gradually shifting our fleet to environmentally friendly solutions, increasingly using hybrids and electric cars in urban traffic and electric forklifts in production.

Services

There is and can be no residue in the birch plywood production process – every piece of wood is a valuable by-product that we responsibly recycle, both in our Group companies and in our partners’ factories. This is why, in both plywood production and wood by-product recycling, we focus on long-life products that help move away from fossil resources and maximise CO2 sequestration.

"Furniers" warehouse wooden beams

Having weighed up the ecological, economic and social benefits, Latvijas Finieris made a strategic decision more than 15 years ago to use wood products as much as possible in the construction of new industrial buildings. In the large-scale glued laminated timber construction solutions, two development phases of RSEZ SIA Verems, a plywood production workshop at Kohila Vineer in Estonia, and an impregnation workshop at the Chemical Products Plant in Bolderāja, have been implemented. Wood products have been used extensively in a number of smaller-scale construction and renovation projects, such as the Furniers warehouse building, which was opened in the summer of 2022. The Latvijas Finieris camping area Abragciems is also a good example of the versatility of wood use and serves as a unique laboratory for the real environment of birch plywood products.

Our policies

The Group’s activities are based on our values, vision, mission and beliefs, as well as a set of sustainability-based policies that provide guidance for various aspects of the corporate agenda.

Educational initiatives

Quality education and knowledge transfer play an important role in the development of companies, the forest sector and society as a whole. To promote this, we have established close cooperation with educational institutions at various levels, developing the Birch Programme, organising the Latvijas Finieris Green Class, as well as engaging in various educational initiatives in cooperation with forest industry partners.
