Solutions for a more fertile forest of the future

At Latvijas Finieris’ “Zābaki” tree farm, all seedlings are grown from carefully selected seed material, ensuring a greater increase in growing stock volume in the forest and a higher quality of the obtained wood variety.

Containerised birch seedlings

Compared to forest seedlings, containerised birch seedlings provide at least 10–20% higher quality and volume of wood in the future.

Birch seedlings with an improved root system

These birch seedlings, averaging one metre tall, are strong and resilient because they have been grown in the open field at a tree farm for a year. These seedlings are especially recommended for areas with the potential for large weed growth, and they allow for a reduction in agricultural maintenance costs.

Seedlings of other tree species

To offer forest owners the opportunity to diversify plantations and create mixed stands, approximately 10% of the total volume produced at “Zābaki” consists of common alder seedlings.

Collaboration with researchers

1998

Latvijas Finieris “Zābaki” nursery, founded in 1998, was one of the first in the country to start producing containerised birch seedlings.

1 500 000 seedlings

Currently, the production volume has reached 1.3 to 1.5 million seedlings per year.

12 000 ha

Over the past 25 years, we have grown a total of 20 million premium seedlings, helping to create more than 12,000 ha of young stands in Latvia’s private forests.

LVMI Silava

To promote the most effective use of land, we closely cooperate with the Latvian State Forest Research Institute Silava on research to improve birch cultivation practices.

Development project 2025

We have initiated an ambitious development project for the “Zābaki” tree farm. It will strengthen our leadership in birch seedling cultivation in Latvia and aid in developing cooperation with scientific research in birch cultivation, as well as in testing, implementing, and developing innovative wood construction solutions.
