Training Within Industry – a new method to increase efficiency of workforce training applied at Latvijas Finieris Group

08.12.2021

This autumn, a new training method – Training Within Industry (TWI) – was introduced to employees of the Latvijas Finieris Group. This method consists of multiple modules – Job Instruction, Job Relations and Job Methods. Right now, Latvijas Finieris is using the Job Instructions (JI) module.

Lignums and Furniers – first mills where the new method is applied

The pilot project involves 10 employees from the Lignums and Furniers mills. Employees who are part of this project are not random – most of them are frontline supervisors from various departments who know the specifics of their work very well and are aware of what’s important for new employees when starting professional duties.

“We are constantly working on implementing various efficiency programs that boost productivity and improve working conditions. TWI is another proactive step towards even more highly skilled personnel. After successfully finishing the training program, these frontline supervisors will become mentors and will carry the method further in their workspace.”

Kārlis Kinderevičs, Efficiency Manager.

After successfully finishing the pilot project at Lignums and Furniers, this method will be applied in other mills, too.

The expected outcomes

In these turbulent times when rotation of workforce is quite high, correct and effective introduction with job duties in the work environment has become especially important.  After actively using the TWI JI, it is expected that the new employees will gain necessary skills in quality, productivity and safety much faster, and it will take less time to create a skilled workforce – the training period of new employees should shorten by at least 25%. Also, productivity should increase without losing quality.
