New solar park unveiled at VEREMS mill to power sustainable manufacturing

11.10.2024

On Thursday, 10 October 2024, Latvijas Finieris AS presented a solar panel park at the subsidiary company VEREMS RSEZ SIA in Vērēmi Rural Territory, Rēzekne Municipality.

The park, covering an area of approximately three hectares, will be powered by 3600 bi-facial solar panels, which will be positioned according to the specific requirements of the terrain using adjustable mounts. The total installed generating capacity of the generators/inverters planned for the connection is 2000 kW, which will be used to partially cover the self-consumption of the VEREMS plant. In addition, 55 lightning arresters were installed.

“Our clients and business partners in more than 50 countries around the world appreciate not only the birch plywood products of Latvijas Finieris but also how responsibly they are manufactured. The new solar park will generate around 2000 MWh of electricity per year, which will be used to partially cover the plant’s own consumption. This further strengthens our competitive position as a sustainable manufacturer,”

says Zinaīda Lovnika, Chairman of the Management Board of VEREMS RSEZ SIA.

The total investment in the solar park is EUR 1.6 million, including EUR 456 000 from ALTUM. It should be noted that the investments in the solar park are being made in conjunction with an ambitious EUR 90 million project for the overall development of the company, which is expected to almost double the production capacity of birch plywood products at the mill and create new jobs for more than 70 people in the Latgale region.

Jānis Irbe, Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Climate and Energy:

“The introduction of renewable energy into manufacturing companies is important for several reasons. It increases the efficiency of the company, strengthens its independence from energy producers, and increases its competitiveness. At the national level, energy security is strengthened as companies, especially those that are leading exporters, become more and more sustainable, reducing the role of imported energy in the manufacturing process.”

The design and construction of the solar park was carried out by Latvenergo AS.

“Latvenergo and Latvijas Finieris have a long and fruitful relationship, which is now even stronger as we have been able to offer the best solution for the development of the Latvijas Finieris solar park. Latvenergo highly appreciates the choice of partners, which will increase the efficiency of the plant and the entire company, and this is essential for the development of the industry and the Latvian economy,”

says Uldis Mucinieks, Sales Director of Latvenergo AS.
