The University of Latvia and Latvijas Finieris are launching a major study on the development of the forest sector

To analyse the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the Latvian forest sector, the University of Latvia (UL), in collaboration with Latvijas Finieris AS, has launched an ambitious study to prepare balanced development scenarios that promote the sustainable growth of the sector and its competitiveness at the national and international level.
Latvia’s forests cover more than half of the country’s territory and the sector accounts for 4–6% of gross domestic product. The sector employs around 40 000 people. At the same time, forests are an important resource for biodiversity conservation and achieving climate goals.
“This study is an important step towards the development of a sustainable forest sector, where economic growth is combined with ecological balance and the promotion of social well-being,”
said Mārtiņš Danusēvičs, scientific leader of the study and lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Latvia.
The importance of the research is reinforced by its interdisciplinary approach, which is ensured by the multifaceted academic and research activities of the UL, as well as by the spectrum of study fields. The UL brings together knowledge and expertise in ecological, sustainability, economic and legal aspects of research, creating a comprehensive view of the development of the sector. This approach allows one to not only analyse the impact of forestry on the economy and ecosystem services but also develop solutions that comply with the legal framework and will ensure the long-term growth and well-being of Latvia.
“Modern economic development is no longer conceivable without a data-driven approach that allows for strategically sound and long-term effective decision-making. Such a comprehensive study is a unique opportunity to strengthen the future competitiveness of Latvia’s forest sector while ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources. Cooperation with the University of Latvia will not only bring together theoretical knowledge and practical experience but will also provide an opportunity to develop solutions that contribute to the transformation of Latvia’s economic development, thus contributing to the sustainable growth of the Latvian economy as a whole,”
says Māris Būmanis, Member of the Management Board of Latvijas Finieris.
In the project “Economic assessment of the potential for balanced development of the Latvian forest sector and scenarios for sustainable development”, the researchers plan to analyse the current regulatory framework and its impact on the economy and ecosystem services, study foreign experience in sustainable forestry and adapt it to Latvian conditions, as well as model development scenarios that balance economic, ecological and social aspects, ensuring long-term prosperity and the conservation of resources for future generations.
The project will develop detailed scenarios covering a range of approaches from intensive economic growth to conservation strategies. In addition, concrete recommendations for policymakers to improve the regulatory framework and develop a sector strategy will be offered.
The results of the study are planned to be presented in the summer of 2025, involving industry experts, policymakers and members of the public. A scientific publication and an international conference are also planned to strengthen Latvia’s voice in the global sustainable forestry debate.
