On 4 September 2025, Latgale’s largest environmental education event, “Green Class 2025”, was held at Sarkaņkalns in Rēzekne Municipality, gathering around 2,000 schoolchildren, their teachers, and experts from forestry and related fields. This year’s event welcomed students and teachers from 42 schools and 139 classes across Latgale. “The Green Class” also stood out for its record 42 educational stations, where schoolchildren, teachers and other visitors explored the forest sector and related professions through practical and engaging activities.
Throughout the day, professionals from the forestry sector and related fields provided both educational and hands-on activities. Participants gained insights into forest care and management, the value of nature, the use of wood resources in sustainable products, and careers in forestry and wood processing. At the same time, the event highlighted the importance of the forest sector for societal well-being, economic development, and the conservation of biodiversity.
This year’s programme was enriched by two panel discussions, which brought together students, educators and industry experts – “Is There Life Without Wood?” explored sustainable forestry and the role of wood in everyday life, while the second panel, “Future Work Environments and Professions”, examined the importance of STEM education and its relevance to the future labour market.
The demonstrations by Border Guard dog handlers and their service dogs also attracted particular interest. Students had the opportunity to meet military security personnel, National Guardsmen, and border guards, and to learn about the latest technologies, including the use of drones.
The organisers noted that “The Green Class” has grown into a region-wide tradition and is the largest environmental education event in Latgale, uniting children, young people, educators, and industry professionals.
“This year, we are especially proud of the record number of educational stations and the broad involvement of our partners. This demonstrates the growing public interest in the forest sector, sustainable development, and future opportunities. “The Green Class” is a place where students not only gain knowledge but also inspiration for their future choices,”
says Arnis Krancāns, one of the organisers and a member of the Executive Board of the Latvijas Finieris Foundation for Sustainable Development.
“The diversity of stations was fantastic – there was something for everyone. The young researchers delved into discoveries, the experimenters enjoyed hands-on trials, and the sporty children thrived in physical activities. Everyone especially appreciated the fact that the event was concluded in a clean, welcoming environment, with a comfortable picnic area and access to drinking water. The children shared that they greatly enjoyed the trip and expressed a wish to return to Sarkaņkalns, noting that there was still more to explore and learn. It was an inspiring and valuable day,”
explains Iveta Kārkle, a teacher at Rudzāti Secondary School.
The next “Green Class” will take place next year, in September 2026.
It should be noted that Latvijas Finieris continues to develop Sarkaņkalns as a centre for education and active recreation, offering diverse groups in society the opportunity to learn about land and forest use, and sustainable interaction with the environment. In summer, Sarkaņkalns regularly hosts educational and cultural events, while in winter it offers skiing and snowboarding activities.
