From curiosity to transparent wood – the work of chemistry lab technician Oļegs at Latvijas Finieris
21.02.2025
Oļegs Osjmaks is a laboratory technician in the Betulin Experimental Laboratory of AS Latvijas Finieris. The pilot plant for the birch-bark extractive – betulin – Betulin Lab, was opened in 2022 and is an example of how scientists and manufacturers can work together to create high quality and innovative products in Latvia. Experienced experts and budding professionals work side by side in the laboratory.
One of them is Oļegs, who is currently still studying chemistry and chemical technology at Riga Technical University and, since 2024, has been combining his studies with a job at AS Latvijas Finieris, where he has the opportunity to work on research and development projects. Oļegs’ path at the company started with an internship. Demonstrating his interest and enthusiasm, as well as responsibility and competence, the young chemist received a job offer after his internship was completed and he has been a full-time employee of Latvijas Finieris since April 2024.
Oļegs’ daily work is mainly in the laboratory, where, given the diverse scope of activities and development plans of Latvijas Finieris, he works with both production-related processes and truly innovative solutions, such as the “transparent wood” project.
“When I first heard about transparent wood, I thought it was something incredible. I didn’t even know that such a material existed and that it was being worked on here in Latvia, at Latvijas Finieris. I am now part of this project and would like to realise it in full,”
says Oļegs proudly.
Speaking of working at Latvijas Finieris, the young specialist highlights the working environment, which is not only safe and stable but also very supportive – the managers are supportive and the colleagues create a good working atmosphere. As a small but pleasant bonus, he also mentions the free lunch provided by the company.
Oļegs believes that an internship at Latvijas Finieris is a great opportunity for any student who wants to gain real experience in the industry:
“Here you can not only learn and observe but also be active and participate in the development of innovation.”
In the future, Oļegs plans to continue his education in a Master’s programme, specialising in technology. Although a PhD is not in his plans at the moment, he does not rule out the possibility of broadening his knowledge in other related fields.
“I am happy to be part of a company that is growing and giving young people the opportunity to thrive professionally,”
Oļegs says, inviting other young people to consider joining the Latvijas Finieris’ team.
