Birch plywood from the Song and Dance Festival is being donated to schools

25.07.2025

Riga Wood birch plywood produced by AS “Latvijas Finieris” was an integral and important part of the stage design at the last School Youth Song and Dance Festival. This durable material was used for the stage design stands and the new platforms for the conductors, with the plywood ensuring the durability of the stages; a hill was even built – a scenic element upon which the participants danced.

Sustainability and circularity are a strategic choice and a priority for both Latvijas Finieris culture and the organisation of the School Youth Song and Dance Festival. Looking for a solution to find a material that could be reused, organisers of the Song and Dance Festival have given the plywood provided and donated by Latvijas Finieris, and used in five locations of the festival, to 11 vocational schools. It is planned that it will be used in the study process.

Uģis Ozols, Riga Wood Baltic director:

“At Latvijas Finieris, the mother company of Riga Wood Baltic, we believe that any plywood we create can serve more than one purpose. The Song and Dance Festival is an important event in the cultural life of Latvia, and we are honoured that material produced by us could be part of this beautiful story. But more importantly, together with the team behind the festival, we found a way to extend the life cycle of these materials by giving them to educational institutions where they will be used for creative and practical study work. This approach not only demonstrates our sustainability principles but also helps strengthen the education and woodworking skills of future generations.”

Inga Vasiļjeva, Head of the XIII Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Festival Organising Group, emphasises:

“We would like to express gratitude to Latvijas Finieris for supporting the Festival for many years. As organisers of the Festival, we care about smart and sustainable management, and it’s important that the materials are put to meaningful use after the Festival. Already in 2023, at the Nationwide Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival, we took steps in this direction together, and I am glad that this time we’ve managed to go even further!”

It should be noted that the material was delivered to the following educational institutions: Riga Art and Media Technical School, Vidzeme Technology and Design Vocational School, Latgale Industrial Technical School, Jelgava Secondary School of Technology, Kuldīga Technology and Tourism Technical School, Liepāja State Technical School, Ogre Technical School, Smiltene Technical College, Riga Technical College, Aizkraukle Vocational Secondary School, and Riga State Technical School.
