Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA): An iterative problem-solving technique invented at Lignums Mill

17. june, 2022

With development and efficiency in the back of our minds, a brand new Problem Solving method Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA), was recently launched at Lignums Mill. This belongs to various tools in use at Latvijas Finieris mills, increasing work efficiency and employees’ engagement level.

By implementing a time- and cost-effective four-stage management methodology, it is possible to continually improve production processes and have systematic testing of possible solutions for identified problems. All the steps should be repeated and carried out regularly, assuring that standards are continuously being met.

“In the pilot project, mechanics, shift leaders, production and mill directors were among those who were involved in the pilot project. A view of various perspectives ensured better problem identification, assessing its importance and finding out possible solutions,” comments Kaspars Putns, technologist at Lignums Mill and the leader of the project. In autumn, PDCA certificate will be granted to Kaspars, bearing the symbolic number 1 – he will become the first employee at Latvijas Finieris Group who has obtained PDCA certification.

Furthermore, the PDCA is at the heart of all ISO standards and supports Kaizen methods, which have been practiced in Latvijas Finieris Group for years already.
