Common Baltic Forest Days Continue in Estonia

15. may, 2013

The second common Baltic planting of birch will take place on 16 May in Kaiu parish, Estonia. This time 6 600 birch seedlings, grown in Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian wood nurseries, will be planted in 2,7ha of Estonian State Forest land.

Last year the first common Forest Days were jointly opened by the Minister of the Environment of Estonia Keit Pentus and Minister of Agriculture of Latvia Laimdota Straujuma. This year invited guests include representatives from Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian local governments, non-governmental institutions and the forest industry.

Väiko Dorbek, Chairman of the Management Board of Kohila Vineer, admits: „Creating a common Baltic platform for quality birch wood growing and utilisation will bring further benefits to Baltic forest owners, business and society. Higher quality seeds and plants together with improved forestry practices will increase the value of forest properties and provide higher potential for balancing environment and social needs”.

Examining Baltic wood resource availability, birch takes a stable position in TOP 3 wood species. Improving and stabilising birch wood supply chain will also make Baltic wood processing companies more competitive on the global market. To reach these goals more effectively, it is critical to unite all major stakeholders in a pan-Baltic initiative, including forest owners, scientists, school children and other participants.

Forest Days are organised by the company Kohila Vineer, subsidiary of Latvijas Finieris.
